South African Load Testing Regulations

Mandatory Load Testing, Inspections & Compliance

Under South Africa’s Driven Machinery Regulations and Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), lifting machinery and lifting equipment must be inspected, examined and load tested at prescribed intervals to ensure safe operation, structural integrity and legal compliance. Load testing is mandatory before equipment is placed into service, after major repairs or modifications, after dismantling and reinstallation, and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 12 months.

Our Load Testing Process

Every crane and lifting machine is subjected to a systematic inspection and performance testing procedure to verify safe working load capacity, operational safety and compliance with applicable South African regulations and standards.

Visual inspection of structure, ropes, chains, hooks and safety devices prior to testing
Verification of structural integrity, mechanical condition and operational safety
Controlled application of calibrated test loads across the lifting range
Monitoring of deflection, brake performance and lifting operation under load
Verification of Safe Working Load (SWL) and safety limitation devices
Certification and compliance documentation issued after successful testing

Why Load Testing is Critical

Load testing helps identify structural weaknesses, worn components, unsafe operating conditions and overloading risks before equipment failure occurs. Proper inspection and certification protects personnel, equipment and operations.

Confirms safe lifting capacity and operational stability
Identifies defects, fatigue and structural weaknesses
Ensures compliance with OHSA and Driven Machinery Regulations
Reduces risk of equipment failure and downtime
Protects personnel, infrastructure and industrial operations
Supports insurance, audits and legal compliance requirements

When Load Testing is Mandatory

South African lifting regulations require lifting machinery and lifting equipment to be load tested and examined under several mandatory conditions to ensure continued safe operation.

Before new lifting machinery is placed into service
After major repairs, modifications or structural alterations
After dismantling and reinstallation of cranes or lifting systems
At intervals not exceeding 12 months
Following incidents, overload events or suspected damage
As part of site safety audits and compliance inspections
