Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) and Driven Machinery Regulations, all lifting equipment must:

• Be designed and manufactured to recognised standards
• Be clearly marked with its Safe Working Load (SWL) / Working Load Limit (WLL)
• Be fitted with effective safety devices (brakes, limits, load protection)
• Be inspected, tested, and certified regularly
• Be used strictly within its rated capacity

These are not recommendations – they are legal requirements.

Safety Factor – What It Means

Every lifting component is designed with a safety factor, which is the ratio between its breaking strength and its working load.

In simple terms:
How much stronger the equipment is compared to what it is allowed to lift

A higher safety factor = more protection against:

• Wear and fatigue
• Shock loading
• Operator error
• Unexpected forces

Typical Safety Factors (Industry Standard)

While exact values depend on design standards, typical safety factors are:

• Chain blocks / hoists: 4:1 – 5:1
• Wire ropes / slings: 5:1 – 6:1
• Shackles & hooks: ±6:1
• Personnel lifting equipment: up to 10:1

This means a 1-ton rated sling may only be allowed to lift 1 ton, but it is designed to withstand 5–6 tons before failure.

Minimum Legal Safety Factors (South Africa)

Where no specific standard applies, regulations require:

• Chains: minimum safety factor of 4
• Steel wire ropes: minimum safety factor of 5
• Fibre ropes: minimum safety factor of 10

These are minimum legal requirements, not best practice.

What You Must Look for When Buying

When selecting lifting equipment, always check:
