THE CORRECT ROPE FOR THE APPLICATION

A Steel Wire Rope Is Not Selected by Diameter Alone

Two ropes with the same outside diameter can have very different constructions, breaking loads, flexibility, rotation characteristics, fatigue performance and resistance to crushing.

That is why replacing a crane or hoist rope simply because another rope has the same diameter can be a costly mistake. The replacement must suit the lifting machine, drum, sheaves, reeving arrangement, lifting height, duty and operating environment.

AC Crane Maintenance assists clients with standard crane ropes, IWRC and fibre-core constructions, compacted ropes, rotation-resistant ropes and specialist high-performance ropes for demanding crane and hoist applications.

Before We Recommend a Rope

Where possible, we identify the existing rope and machine specification before recommending a replacement.

  • Crane or hoist manufacturer and model
  • Existing rope diameter
  • Existing rope construction
  • Core type - IWRC or fibre core
  • Lay direction and rope type
  • Required rope length
  • Minimum breaking load where specified
  • Drum and reeving arrangement
  • Lifting height and operating duty
  • Existing rope certificate or specification
WIRE ROPE CONSTRUCTIONS

Steel Wire Rope Options

Rope construction must be matched to the machine and application. The examples below represent common categories used across crane, hoist and industrial lifting systems; final selection should be confirmed against the equipment and rope requirements.

GENERAL PURPOSE

6×19 Construction

A commonly encountered wire rope family offering a balance between strength and abrasion resistance. Suitability depends on the specific construction, core, machine and application.

FLEXIBILITY

6×36 Construction

A more flexible rope family commonly considered where repeated bending over drums and sheaves is an important operating factor. Exact construction and specification must still match the machine.

STEEL CORE

IWRC Rope

Independent Wire Rope Core constructions provide a steel core and are commonly used where strength, structural support and resistance to crushing are important considerations.

FIBRE CORE

FC Rope

Fibre-core ropes can offer increased flexibility in suitable applications. They should not be substituted for an IWRC rope without confirming the required machine and rope specification.

HIGH PERFORMANCE

Compacted Wire Rope

Compacted rope constructions can provide improved strand contact, increased metallic area and favourable performance characteristics for demanding applications when correctly selected.

LOAD ROTATION

Rotation-Resistant Rope

Rotation-resistant and low-rotation rope constructions are used where controlling rope and load rotation is important. Selection depends strongly on the crane, reeving arrangement and application.

ROPE SPECIFICATION

What Determines the Correct Crane Rope?

A correct rope specification considers the complete operating system. Changing one characteristic without considering the others can affect spooling, fatigue life, drum behaviour and overall performance.

Diameter Must suit the equipment and rope system.
Construction Strand and wire arrangement affect rope behaviour.
Core IWRC, fibre core or application-specific construction.
Lay Direction and lay type must match the application.
Breaking Load Required strength must be confirmed from the specification.
Rope Length Based on reeving, drum capacity and lifting travel.
Drum & Sheaves Geometry and condition directly influence rope performance.
Duty & Environment Frequency, loading and conditions affect rope selection.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Wire Rope Solutions for Crane & Lifting Equipment

We assist with steel wire rope enquiries across a broad range of lifting machinery and industrial applications.

OVERHEAD CRANES

Overhead Crane Rope

Replacement rope for single and double girder overhead cranes, including rope hoists and open-drum lifting arrangements.

HOISTS

Electric Wire Rope Hoists

Rope selection and replacement support for industrial wire rope hoists used in manufacturing, engineering, mining and maintenance.

MOBILE CRANES

Mobile Crane Rope

High-performance and specialist rope enquiries for mobile crane applications where the correct machine and existing rope specification can be established.

GANTRY SYSTEMS

Gantry & Portal Cranes

Steel wire ropes for industrial gantry and portal lifting systems, selected according to the lifting arrangement and machine design.

WINCHES

Industrial Winch Rope

Wire rope for suitable industrial winches and pulling or lifting systems, selected around the actual winch design and application.

SPECIALIST

High-Duty Applications

Specialist compacted, rotation-resistant and high-performance rope solutions for demanding crane applications where standard rope may not provide the required performance.

SOUTH AFRICAN LIFTING REQUIREMENTS

Steel Wire Rope Safety Factors

The required safety factor depends on whether the rope forms part of a lifting machine or is being used as lifting tackle. These should not be treated as the same application.

Machine Standard Where steel wire rope forms part of the load path of a lifting machine, the safety factor prescribed by the standard to which that machine was manufactured applies.
5 Minimum Where that lifting-machine standard does not prescribe a safety factor, the Driven Machinery Regulations provide for a steel-wire rope safety factor of at least 5 relative to the machine's safe working load.
6 / 8 Steel-wire rope used as lifting tackle has separate requirements: a factor of 6, with at least 8 applying to specified double-part endless sling and grommet arrangements.
Important: These factors should not be used as a shortcut for selecting a crane rope. The machine manufacturer's specification, applicable design standard, rope construction, breaking load, reeving arrangement and operating conditions must be considered when determining the correct replacement rope.
INSPECTION • REPLACEMENT • CONDITION

When a Crane Rope Needs Attention

Wire rope deterioration can develop through normal service, incorrect spooling, unsuitable sheave or drum conditions, corrosion, mechanical damage or incorrect rope selection. Rope condition should therefore be considered together with the equipment it runs on.

Warning Signs

  • Broken wires or concentrated wire breaks
  • Visible corrosion or severe deterioration
  • Kinks or permanent deformation
  • Bird-caging or strand distortion
  • Flattening or crushing
  • Abnormal diameter reduction
  • Heat or electrical damage
  • Severe abrasion or external wear
  • Poor or irregular drum spooling
  • Damage associated with rope guide failure

Check the Complete Rope System

  • Drum condition and rope grooves
  • Sheave groove condition
  • Sheave diameter and alignment
  • Rope guide condition and adjustment
  • Fleet angle and spooling behaviour
  • Rope anchorage and terminations
  • Reeving arrangement
  • Upper and lower limits
  • Required rope length
  • Original rope specification
Simply installing another rope may not solve repeated rope failures. Where premature wear continues, the drum, sheaves, rope guide, reeving, alignment, operating conditions and selected rope construction should also be investigated.
MORE THAN ROPE SUPPLY

Rope Replacement as Part of the Complete Crane System

AC Crane Maintenance is an overhead crane company, not simply a wire rope reseller. This allows a rope problem to be considered as part of the complete lifting system.

Where required and within the project scope, rope replacement can be combined with inspection of related crane and hoist components such as drums, sheaves, rope guides, limits, hooks and lifting mechanisms.

  • Existing rope identification
  • Rope replacement enquiries
  • Reeving assessment
  • Drum inspection
  • Sheave inspection
  • Rope guide assessment
  • Hoist inspection
  • Crane servicing support

Repeated Rope Failure?

If a crane is repeatedly damaging ropes, replacing the rope alone may only reset the problem.

Send us details of the crane, hoist, existing rope and the type of damage being experienced. We can assess whether the enquiry should include the rope guide, drum, sheaves, reeving or other hoist components.

STEEL WIRE ROPE RFQ

Send Us the Rope Specification

The more information we receive, the quicker we can identify the correct rope or investigate a suitable replacement.

01 - Crane / hoist manufacturer and model
02 - Rope diameter
03 - Rope construction if known
04 - IWRC or fibre core if known
05 - Lay direction / rope designation
